Vertical Disc Mixer
A vertical disc mixer, also known as a disc mixer, is a mixing device that uses a vertically mounted rotating disc as the working container and stirring teeth or arms as the mixing tools. It is primarily used for mixing powder materials. This equipment is one of the most commonly used mixing devices in industries such as fertilizer production, chemical processing, building materials manufacturing, and mineral processing.
The design concept of the vertical disc mixer is based on "vertical layout, three-dimensional mixing, compactness, and high efficiency." Unlike horizontal mixers, the vertical disc mixer uses a vertically rotating disc design, utilizing specially angled lifting plates or stirring teeth at the bottom of the disc to lift and scatter the material. The material generates intense relative motion in three-dimensional space, ensuring thorough mixing of raw materials with different specific gravities and particle sizes. The machine has a compact structure, small footprint, and low energy consumption, making it particularly suitable for small and medium-sized production lines with limited space. This equipment can operate continuously, with fast mixing speed and high mixing uniformity, and is widely used in industries such as organic fertilizer, compound fertilizer, chemicals, mining, and building materials.
Vertical disc mixers, with their unique three-dimensional mixing method and highly efficient mixing capabilities, have become key equipment for ensuring the homogenization of nutrient content in materials. For production enterprises that seek high mixing efficiency, small footprint, and ease of operation, vertical disc mixers are a highly cost-effective choice.
Overall structure and core components
The vertical disc mixer boasts a scientifically sound and compact overall structure, primarily composed of the following five systems:
(I) Mixing Disc System: This is the main container of the equipment, a vertically placed rotating disc. The mixing disc contains a cylinder with a cylindrical cover, to which the mixing arms are fixed. The disc is lined with polypropylene or stainless steel, offering excellent material resistance and durability. The disc diameter ranges from 1500mm to 3000mm, with a wall height typically between 400-550mm.
(II) Mixing Working System: This is the core working component of the equipment, consisting of the mixing shaft, mixing arms, and mixing teeth. The output shaft of the reducer drives the mixing shaft, which has fixed mixing teeth. The shaft drives the teeth to thoroughly mix the materials. The mixing arms are fixed to the cylindrical cover and rotate with it. The mixing teeth are made of a high-wear-resistant special alloy.
(III) Transmission System: This includes a motor, a cycloidal pinwheel reducer, and couplings. The transmission mechanism typically employs a cycloidal pinwheel reducer, featuring a compact structure, convenient operation, uniform mixing, and easy unloading and conveying. The transmission connection utilizes a nylon pin-driven connector for drive transmission. All working components are mounted and fixed to the frame.
(IV) Frame System: This serves as the foundation for the entire equipment, constructed from high-quality carbon steel plates and channel steel. The frame undergoes rigorous process requirements and product certification, ensuring a robust and stable structure.
(V) Discharge and Auxiliary System: This includes a discharge port (located at the bottom of the disc, which, when used with a pneumatic butterfly valve, enables rapid unloading), a top feed inlet, a top-mountable atomizing nozzle (for adding liquid bacterial agents or anti-caking agents), and an automatic scraper (ensuring materials do not adhere to the equipment during mixing).
Applicable fields and industry coverage
Vertical disc mixers have a wide range of applications. In fertilizer production, they are core equipment for mixing multi-component materials in organic fertilizer, compound fertilizer, blended fertilizer, and bio-organic fertilizer production lines. In the chemical industry, they are widely used for powder mixing in fine chemicals, coatings, and additives. In the building materials industry, they can be used for mixing raw materials for building coatings, insulation materials, and other building materials. In the mining industry, they can be used for mixing mineral processing agents, mineral powders, and other materials. The equipment is suitable for mixing powdery, granular, and other dry powder materials.
Types of available raw materials
Vertical disc mixers can process a wide variety of raw materials. Fertilizer raw materials: organic fertilizer powder, compound fertilizer raw materials, bio-organic fertilizer, nutrient soil, etc. Chemical raw materials: coatings, additives, chemical powders, etc. Building material raw materials: architectural coatings, insulation materials, etc. The equipment is suitable for mixing dry powder materials such as powders and granules, and can also process high-moisture and viscous materials.
Operating principles and hybrid mechanisms
The working principle of a vertical disc mixer is based on a combination of centrifugal dispersion and gravitational diffusion. An electric motor drives a high-torque cycloidal pinwheel reducer, which in turn drives the main shaft, which in turn drives the mixing teeth to agitate the materials. Its workflow can be divided into three core stages:
Material Dispersion Stage:When the motor drives the disc to rotate at high speed, the material falls into the disc from the top inlet and is instantly lifted to a higher position by the lifting plates or mixing teeth. Under centrifugal force, the material moves radially outward along the disc.
Gravitational Diffusion Stage:After being lifted to a higher position, the material falls in a parabolic trajectory under the influence of gravity. During this process, the material particles undergo tens of thousands of collisions, interpenetration, and diffusion, allowing materials with significantly different specific gravities to fully mix.
Three-Dimensional Mixing Stage:Compared to horizontal mixing, the vertical structure effectively utilizes gravitational potential energy, reducing dead zones in the mixing process. The residence time of the material in the disc can be precisely controlled by adjusting the disc rotation speed and the discharge port height. This equipment can uniformly mix materials with a 1:10,000 ratio.
Core advantages and performance highlights
Vertical disc mixers offer the following key advantages: High mixing uniformity – capable of uniformly mixing materials at a 1:10,000 ratio with a standard deviation of 0.003%. Fast mixing speed – high mixing efficiency and fast discharge speed. Small footprint – compact vertical structure, flexible space requirements. Low energy consumption – loading coefficient of 0.7-0.9. Smooth operation and low noise. Easy to clean – the mixing mechanism is integral, with smooth transitions at the welded edges. Non-stick and wear-resistant – the disc is lined with polypropylene or stainless steel, preventing material sticking and providing wear resistance. Long service life – can operate continuously for a long period.
