Disc granulator paired with a horizontal ribbon fertilizer mixer: The key to mixing lightweight powders

2026/11/03

In organic fertilizer production lines, the combination of a disc granulator and a horizontal ribbon fertilizer mixer is frequently used to process lightweight, low-viscosity powdered materials. This pairing is effective because the ribbon mixer addresses the disc granulator’s requirement for a "fluffy and uniform" feed.

Inside the horizontal cylindrical chamber, inner and outer ribbon agitators rotate in opposite directions: the outer ribbon pushes material from the ends toward the center, while the inner ribbon pushes it from the center toward the ends, creating a convective circulation. This design is highly efficient for mixing powders with low density and good flowability—such as decomposed straw powder, spent mushroom substrate, or hydrolyzed feather meal. The mixing process is rapid, typically achieving uniformity within 2–4 minutes, with minimal residual material and low risk of cross-contamination between batches.

Disc granulators rely on the rolling motion of materials to form granules. If lightweight powders are not mixed thoroughly, the material may segregate—with lighter particles floating and heavier ones sinking—leading to inconsistent granule sizes. A horizontal ribbon fertilizer mixer ensures that components of varying densities are blended evenly before entering the granulator, resulting in a stable material bed and significantly improved granule sphericity. Furthermore, when a formulation includes trace elements or functional microbial agents, this efficient, short-duration mixing process helps prevent the segregation of these components.

Horizontal ribbon fertilizer mixers are less suited for high-moisture, sticky materials; if the moisture content exceeds 25%, the material tends to adhere to the ribbons and the chamber walls, creating "dead zones." Consequently, this setup is best used for materials that have already been dried and pulverized, with an input moisture content ideally kept below 20%. In terms of production capacity, horizontal ribbon fertilizer mixers typically operate in batches; therefore, a buffer silo is required to bridge the gap with the continuous feeding process of the disc granulator, preventing the need for frequent starts and stops.

While the disc granulator determines the final shape of the granules, the horizontal ribbon fertilizer mixer ensures the "foundation"—the lightweight powder mixture—is perfectly uniform. Choosing the right mixing method is essential for the disc granulator to produce consistent, uniform granules with a balanced nutrient distribution.
