Belt Conveyor

A belt conveyor is a piece of transport machinery that relies on friction drive to continuously convey materials. Widely used in industries such as mining, metallurgy, coal, electric power, ports, chemicals, and building materials, it is one of the most fundamental pieces of material-handling equipment in industrial production. Given that belt conveyors typically operate continuously under heavy loads, proper operation and quality maintenance are directly linked to the equipment's service life, operational safety, and the continuous, stable functioning of the production line. Strictly adhering to operating procedures and performing routine maintenance can effectively reduce equipment failure rates and ensure production safety.

Belt conveyor operations involve multiple systems—including mechanical transmission, electrical control, and material transport—and negligence in any aspect can lead to equipment failure or even safety accidents. Establishing a scientific and standardized system for operation and maintenance is essential to ensuring the long-term, efficient, and stable operation of belt conveyors.

Structural composition of the equipment

Belt conveyors are primarily composed of the following components:

(I) Conveyor belt: Serves as both the load-bearing and traction element.

(II) Drive unit: Includes the electric motor, gear reducer, drive pulley, etc.

(III) Idlers: Include types such as troughing idlers, flat idlers, self-aligning idlers, and impact (cushion) idlers.

(IV) Pulleys: Include drive pulleys and bend (redirecting) pulleys.

(V) Tensioning device: Types include screw, carriage, counterweight, and hydraulic systems.

(VI) Frame: Supports all components.

(VII) Auxiliary devices: Includes safety and protection devices such as belt cleaners, discharge devices, belt sway switches, speed switches, and pull-cord switches.

Application scope of the equipment

Belt conveyors are widely used across various industries requiring continuous material transport, including mining, metallurgy, coal, electric power, ports, chemicals, building materials, grain, organic fertilizers, and compound fertilizers.

Types of usable raw materials

Belt conveyors can transport bulk materials (such as coal, crushed stone, sand, cement, fertilizer, and grain) as well as packaged goods (individual items weighing less than 100 kg). Generally, the temperature of the conveyed material should be below 60°C.

The working principle of the equipment

The working principle of a belt conveyor is as follows: the conveyor belt loops around the drive pulley and various bend pulleys to form a closed circuit, with appropriate tension applied by a tensioning device. During operation, the drive unit transmits power through the friction between the drive pulley and the conveyor belt, driving the belt in continuous motion. Material is loaded onto the belt at the feed end and transported to the discharge end for unloading. The equipment must be started under no-load conditions.

Equipment operating instructions

(I) Pre-start Checks: Before startup, adjust the conveyor belt tension and ensure belt fasteners are secure. Check that drive components (bearings, gears, chains, etc.) are in good condition and that idlers and safety guards are fully in place. Verify that electrical protective grounding or neutral connections are sound and that the belt width matches the drum width. Inspect the area around the conveyor for foreign objects. Ensure stationary belt conveyors are installed on a solid foundation. Clarify signaling protocols and operational routes.

(II) No-load Startup: Start the conveyor without a load; feed material only after normal operation is established—starting the machine after loading is prohibited. If startup is difficult or the load increases, stop the machine immediately; forced startup is forbidden. Resume operation only after identifying and resolving the issue. Wear appropriate protective gear and fasten cuffs securely before operating.

(III) Operational Monitoring: Ensure uniform feeding during operation to avoid overloading. Monitor the belt for smooth movement and check for any misalignment (tracking issues). Stop the machine to correct misalignment; do not continue operation, as this causes edge wear and increases the load. When multiple conveyors operate in a series, the shutdown sequence must proceed sequentially from the rear to the front. Walking, sitting, or lying on the conveyor belt is strictly prohibited.

(IV) Shutdown Procedures: Clear all material from the conveyor before stopping; shut down only after the belt is completely empty. Operation beyond rated load or speed limits is prohibited. Personnel other than authorized operators are forbidden from entering the control room or operating station.

Equipment maintenance methods

(I) Daily Maintenance: Clean residual material and dust from the equipment after each shift. Inspect the conveyor belt for damage and check joints for looseness. Check the lubrication status of drum bearings and replenish grease promptly. Correct any belt misalignment immediately. Idler stagnation may result from bearing failure due to excessive load or debris ingress caused by damaged seals; replace with idler units featuring high-quality seals.

(II) Periodic Maintenance: Regularly tighten bolts and nuts to prevent loosening due to vibration. Periodically check the conveyor belt's tracking to ensure smooth operation. Regularly inspect idlers and other components, replacing any that are damaged. Periodically verify the integrity of connecting bolts, drums, drive systems, and the belt itself, addressing any issues promptly.

(III) Lubrication Management: Add lubricant promptly to ensure bearings remain well-lubricated. Change the gear oil in the speed reducer according to the prescribed schedule.
